The backdrop of my novel MagicLand is exactly what you're speaking of. It's set 2000 years after the one percent wipe out the rest of us with pathogens because they don't want to deal with climate change refugees and consequences. In the novel, the pathogens are targeted and changed using CRISPR, but I would not be at all surprised if they passive aggressively let this stuff thrive.
The post is spot on 100%. I can't know their intent, but they abandoned the right of good will a long time ago, beginning with your descriptive story about a grinning Musk. I'll assume the worst for now.
I've still got about 30 N95 masks. I should stock up while they are still inexpensive and in good supply. But as a recent stroke survivor, I'm more interested in how other people cope and survive.
Thanks. :) I wrote this very much in the wake of that "empty shelves" article, trying to model how you can discuss a threat without all the b.s. I also think that the irony of Musk cutting Ebola prevention funding a year ago is just such a great example of how things people believe won't have consequences... have consequences.
Agree on getting at least a box or two of N95 masks. Piggybacking on a previous article, we wouldn't even have to worry about them if we'd taken pandemic threats seriously. I remember last year and the year before, you could find giant boxes of N95 masks in dumpsters, unopened. Some groups tried to rescue them.
I wrote so many articles on the potential consequences of those cuts that I lost the use of the tips of my fingers. I’m exaggerating, but just a little.
Yep. The only thing that surprises me at this point is how swift and how direct the consequences are getting. People are becoming illogical, but the systems behave as expected. What happens when you cut Ebola prevention? Surprise, you get outbreaks of Ebola! Even a little faster than anticipated...
We have a incredibly virulent virus that we know is transferred by bodily fluids. It might be able to (or already is) go airborne via droplets. N95 masks will stop those.
Do those droplets need to be inhaled? Would droplet to open wound transmission be possible? 🤔 If so, we <might> in an extreme case, be looking at a disease that requires HAZMAT suits to avoid. Right now, that sounds extremely unlikely to me. However, Black Swan events happen. Given MAGA's idiotic disdain for masking, it could blow through the population like wildfire.
I wonder if Musk and company have read Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death?"
It would depend on how Ebola binds. Respiratory seems fairly nailed down. Even Covid can technically infect you via the eyes, but I know Linsey Marr and other aerosol scientists have said those other routes are harder and rarer, it's mainly via nose and airways. I would never stop anyone from taking more precautions.
Hi All - I'm wondering if someone can answer my question about N95 masks. I'm just about to buy a couple of boxes, and darn, they are expensive. Because of this, I am inclined to get as most mileage as I can out of each mask and would like to re-wear the same one for as long as it's safe to do so. Is this a good idea? How long do you keep a mask on rotation for? Obviously, I don't want to be wearing a mask that is no longer effective...thanks in advance!
CDC suggests keeping a few masks in rotation, keeping them in paper bags, and labeling them. I have 3 hooks on my bedroom door just for N95 masks. We have a few more hooks by the front door.
South African borne and raised in a family that literally helped structurally implement and justify and maintain apartheid in South Africa, Elon Musk had already proven his bona fides when it comes to supporting anything that could potentially kill as many Black people as possible. That this man was hired by the most infamous White Supremacist President in the past 100 years, Donald Trump— whose racist bona fides challenge another White racist of a President Ronald Reagan. Yes. That Ronald Reagan. He who literally was an apologist for the Rodney King verdict and supported the continuation of apartheid be buttressing White Afrikaners efficiently killing Black Africans by summary execution in the infamous Soweto and Sharpesville protest massacres.
The history is clear regarding not only White intentional racism but also White people indifference by too many White American citizens—who indisputable continue to populate the largest part of the American electorate—today continue to support in a proudly racist Republican party. The electoral cohort that is White America, glorifies an indisputable Black focused genocidal tendency in Elon Musk—a man who assured a deadly virus (one specific largely to its outsized presence in African nations) to proliferate as he, no doubt, savored every death while smilng about.
Too many White Americans idolized this White supremacist. That is an indictment of not only institutionalized hatred of Black peoples in the United States. The reality of Elon Musk idolized as a Black people hating White industrialist by by so many of Republican politicians and White citizens who branded themselves proudly as "Ronald Reagan" Republicans is an involvement White people as a collective electoral cohort in the United States of America.
Such a great peace. Both the info and the writing. Good to know that about the N95 masks. I still wear masks sometimes even now depending on where I go.
Curious what other tools you were referring to here
“The people like me are not the ones freaking out about Ebola now, because we have the tools we need and we know how to use them.”
Thanks! I think it's very important. Just like everything else, we don't need a handful of people masking perfectly, we need a majority masking imperfectly and at least having some on hand. (They last for years.) In countries like South Korea, you can just walk into a store and choose from several different styles, sizes, and brands of masks, knowing they've all been tested and approved. U.S. never got there and instead chose to go in the opposite direction.
The idea that he could engineer bringing ebola to America gives Trump a mushroom woodie. He would be working wifey hard as Americans died horribly, just as he no doubt did during COVID but worse.
A strain of Ebola has been in this country once before in the late 80’s. Someone I was close to who passed away, lost his brother after an untested monkey brought in from Africa scratched him in the lab he worked for. He was deceased two weeks later after being taken off life support. He wasn’t the only researcher who experienced this in the country.
Why do you think they kept that virus contained in Africa? It was to save their population and stop it from crossing borders.
It's all part of Peter Thiel's Dark Enlightenment. They want us dead. Unlike COVID, ebola will run through like a bloody tidal wave. It can be treated, but there won't be resources to treat the number afflicted. If it remains in Africa, unlikely in this global economy, I'm sure we will be there to gather their natural resources afterwards.
"The fools in charge". What an extraordinary and dangerous assertion. The people running things have had total control of everything you think you know about what is going on for centuries. Their ability to manipulate billions of people is spectacular, they even have you thinking they are fools.
This is another great example of someone who subscribes to my newsletter, presumably reads my essays week after week, and instead of engaging with my content, decides to find one phrase they don't like and then use that as a reason to attack me.
Let me ask you: Someone with billions of dollars, who could cash out at any point and spend the rest of their life living in luxury and privilege, instead chooses to hatch scheme after scheme trying to control the world, with the ultimate goal of watching it all burn from a bunker and hoping their guards don't kill them in their sleep or that their robots don't malfunction and kill them in their sleep.
What would you call that?
Still a fool.
Many of the writers you follow know and respect my work, and they don't treat me like this. If this is how you're going to act, then I'll ban you.

Thank you, Jessica. This is really good. Fuck the guy who said otherwise.
Thank you!
Just thinking out loud here.

It reminds of a poster made a few decades ago for a doctors office:” Go ahead and smoke, it’s good for business”

Yes! My understanding is you can wear an N95 mask up to 40 hours as long as it doesn't get wet or dirty. And/or 3-4 uses. Between uses keep them in a paper bag. There's a great thread on this here where people share sources: https://www.reddit.com/r/Coronavirus/comments/s29psb/how_long_can_i_keep_using_the_same_n95_respirator/

Well written.

Ah, makes sense. A few people have been up in my face telling me that Ebola doesn't exist. They're either conned or part of the campaign.
Thought you’d like to see some support on your thesis re: ebola disinformation campaign…what to do when no one pays attention. 🙌

They want as many people as possible to die. It is a death cult.
